Reading Response #1

Chapter 1 "They Say"

Exercise 1
a) Many people consider groundwater safe to drink. However scientists suggest that there are dangerous levels of chemical X in the Ohio groundwater.

b) Religious folks would believe God drives history. In contrast, Atheists would believe material forces drive history.

c) Some psychologists say proponents of Freudian psychology question standard notions of "rationality".

d) Observing a classroom, one would notice that male students often dominate class discussions.

e) A handful of critics have stated that the film is about the problems of romantic relationships.

f) A few teachers suggest reading a template to arouse creativity but I'm afraid that templates like the ones in this book will stifle my creativity.

Exercise 2
If ever there was an idea custom-made for a Jay Leno monologue, this was it: crazy people who think they can see the future. Isn't that like saying you can trust a hobo? Whatever happened honesty and integrity.
I happen to sympathize with the people who do not believe in these loony psychics, though perhaps because i am also one of them.

  1. I found your assignment much easier to read than all the others! The sentences were phrased exactly as I would have done. The only thing that i believe could be improved on is in the monolouge where you made an assumption that all hobos are untrustworthy. Although it is probably true that many are not i do not believe that the assumption should be made for all that we consider to be "hobos". Possibly just a rewording needed.

  2. I really liked your assignment because it was different from everyone else's. I especially liked your point B. The religious example I thought was clear and helped me to understand the exercise better. The only thing I would question is point F. You wrote "I'm" which contradicts the whole point of this assignment to use “they say” sentences.

  3. I like how you handled the first exercise. For F, you were creative and did not just use the "They Say" aspect. I like how you kept the "I say" part too. For the Jay Leno monologue, what you say makes a lot of sense, because who would trust a hobo?

  4. I also chose this chapter exercises. I found it hard to put in the they say and I say to the statements. Even though we were given templates, I found it hard to make them fit correctly. I think you did a good job on exercise 1. I like exercise 2. That a topic i could see on t.v. I also believe those people too.
